About telomeres

 Keda (Note 4).

Another problem with the in vitro cellular senescence model with an emphasis on dividing cells is that the life of an individual is not supported solely by dividing cells. As mentioned above, an adult individual is made up of dividing cells and non-dividing cells. It goes without saying that non-dividing nerve cells, skeletal muscle / myocardial cells, and liver and kidney cells that hardly divide are essential for life support. The number of non-dividing cells is overwhelmingly large. Therefore, an aging model that focuses only on dividing cells should be said to be one-sided when considering individual aging. In this respect as well, telomeres cannot be regarded as coupon tickets for individual lifespan. As will be described later, telomeres are also shortened by oxidative stress, which may affect gene expression and reduce cell function. Therefore, it cannot be denied that telomeres of non-dividing cells are involved in individual aging.
