What is depression?

Depression is a very difficult illness to describe in one word, but it is a condition of lack of energy in the brain. Not only does it cause psychological symptoms such as depressed mood and decreased motivation (appetite, sleep lust, libido, etc.), but it is not uncommon for it to be accompanied by various physical subjective symptoms.

In other words, it can be considered that the lack of energy has caused troubles in the entire system of the brain.

We have a wonderful feature called natural healing power, which usually leads to recovery from various defects. We sometimes feel depressed in our daily lives. An unpleasant event can also reduce your appetite. However, if the brain is not deficient in energy, the natural healing power usually rejuvenates over time.

If it does not improve or worsens over time, it will be a major obstacle to your life and will be regarded as a "disease". When the obstacles to life become large, the original social functions such as work, housework, and study will not work well, and it will also interfere with the whole daily life such as socializing with people and hobbies.

Various characteristics of depression

The pathology of "depression" is diverse. There are various characteristics such as (1) how symptoms appear, (2) severity, (3) initial or recurrence, and (4) disease type.

In addition, terms such as new type depression and modern type depression do not exist in the diagnostic criteria used by specialists, and therefore there is no definition.

① Various ways of manifesting symptoms

Depression is only seen in depression, but there is also a illness called bipolar disorder that repeats depression and manic states. Since the treatment method is different, it is necessary to make a judgment by a specialist.

② Various severity

Severity varies depending on the degree of disability that appears in work and daily life due to symptoms. "Mild illness" is a level in which people around you are often unaware of the changes, although they are aware of the obstacles that occur in their work, daily life, and communication with others. On the other hand, "severe" is a level at which work, daily life, and communication with others are clearly difficult. "Moderate" lies between "mild" and "severe".

③ Perspective of whether it is the first or recurrence

It is a classification of "singleness" or "repetition". In the case of "repetitive", prevention of recurrence is especially important, and the possibility of bipolar disorder should also be considered.

④ Classification by characteristic disease type

There are "melancholic type", "atypical", "seasonal type", "postpartum" and so on.

The "melancholic type" is often referred to as typical depression. It refers to a process in which the energy of the brain is exhausted while being over-adapted to various tasks, responsibilities, and roles. The characteristics are that even if there are good things, you do not feel well at all, obvious loss of appetite and weight loss, depression is always the worst in the morning, you wake up early in the morning (more than 2 hours before normal), excessive There is a feeling of guilt.

On the other hand, "atypical" is characterized by feeling better for good things, appetite is overeating and weight gain, hypersomnia, severe fatigue, and hypersensitivity to criticism from others.

"Seasonal" is a type of "repetitive", in which depression develops in a specific season and recovers as the seasons change. Although it can occur in any season, winter depression is well known and its relationship with daylight hours has been pointed out.

"Postpartum" depression develops within 4 weeks of postpartum. It is thought that the combination of unhealthy factors such as hormonal changes, labor fatigue, anxiety about child-rearing, and lack of sleep due to breastfeeding is affected.
